Are you tired of finding similar, repetitive and predictable racing games? Tired of failing to satisfy your thirst for something really exciting and different? Do you seek to find the reality -the gore, even- of authentic racing experience? Fear not, for Happy Wheels achieves that, bringing racing and violence to the perfect balance. This is a game that involves a lot of crude cartoonish humour and enjoyment. Definitely don’t try this at home, kids.

Happy Wheels is racing to your fingers

For those who are familiar with the PC version, you can now play the game for free on iOS devices. Though this may sound less exciting, the use of mobile interface is surprisingly smooth. Tapping onto the jump button feels just as responsive as smashing the space bar in the desktop version, making the game just as enjoyable in your hands as it is on your keyboard. The mobile version’s graphics are just like the original PC version; the 2D animation surprisingly does not limit the bone-crushing, blood spilling and realistic backflips that you will often encounter as you progress through each level’s obstacles. There is a reason why this game is a trending item in the App Store, and it’s not just because of its crazy, over the top world of deadly machines.

If this is your first time encountering Happy Wheels, the objective is simple. You play as a business man on a Segway flying through obstacles and race tracks, trying your absolute best to not be smashed to your death bed through the different, bizarre and over-the-top obstacles you’re bound to find along the way. The game combines humour and logic, as it’s not enough to just speed through a time bomb or a field of spikes; Happy Wheels somehow still asks of you to play strategically – put yourself in his shoes, would you pedal your way through a land mine? Well, that’s up to you. This game does not restrict you from choosing to watch your character slice, behead, crush and smash his way to death. In many levels, I found myself wanting to enjoy such a scene rather than completing the objective. Having said all of this, I would not recommend this game to players under 12 due to the level and amount of violence that is all over the platform. Parents, be mindful!

Customisation is deadly

As well as playing a business man, you can also progress through levels playing as an irresponsible dad, a homeless elderly man, a fatso and many more characters that you’d expect to find in such a crude environment. There is no discrimination in Happy Wheels and that includes customising your own unique level and strategically placing each obstacle wherever and whenever you decide. There is an array of obstacles available from land mines to spikes, you are free to create a world of your own. This reminded me of Little Big Planet’s features and gave me a sense of control, creativity and ambition. You don’t just want to put your character through agony, but you want to execute this artistically – whatever that means in your mind.

The only consequence I have found within this feature is that it can be slightly confusing where and how to place certain objects. It will take some extra time to familiarise yourself, but once you’ve gotten the hang of it, Happy Wheels becomes an obsessive domain for all tracks and challenges alike. You also have the option to share your levels with other players to test out, but this is only made available in a limited amount of apps including iMessage.

The attention to detail is both chilling and superb. Every bone, ligament, vein, organ and bloodshed is captured as you encounter your character’s mayhem. The violence provided in this game is extremely hilarious (you are controlling a man in a business suit, for goodness sake). However, you do need to be patient as ads are quite common to appear in between completing levels. This is also quite frequent in the desktop version so patience is a must.

Ready, set… Happy Wheels!

Whether you’re looking to create different obstacles with a touch of Tarantino or just looking to experience a game rich with a combination of humour and gore, Happy Wheels is an addictive, slightly dark and current favourite that you won’t want to miss.
